Description, duties, responsibilities

Purpose

Business Development Director is responsible for developing the business side of the School.  He/she must identify rising business opportunities and build long-term relationships with prospects. As well, they evaluate the current performance of the business and find ways to help the business reach its full potential.

Business Development Responsibilities

A business development professional has three primary responsibilities:

  • Identifying new business opportunities
  • Pitching products and/or services
  • Maintaining fruitful relationships with existing customers

Duties include:

  • Researching organisations and individuals online (especially on social media) to identify new leads and potential new markets
  • Researching the needs of other companies and learning who makes decisions about purchasing
  • Contacting potential clients via email or phone to establish rapport and set up meetings
  • Planning and overseeing new marketing initiatives including research, proposal writing, pitching, cost analysis, marketing, and overseeing the execution
  • Attending conferences, meetings, and industry events
  • Preparing presentations
  • Contacting clients to inform them about new developments in the company’s products
  • Developing quotes and proposals
  • Negotiating and renegotiating by phone, email, and in person
  • Developing sales goals for the team and ensuring they are met
  • Training personnel and helping team members develop their skills
  • Track the financial health of each project and report to the upper management, making recommendations to consistently expand and improve the services offered

Requirements and Skills

  • Degree in business or other related field


  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in business development


  • Fluent in English with strong writing and presentation skills


  • Ability to communicate in Kinyarwanda and/or French
