Description, duties, responsibilities

Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa) offers two masters’ programs to students from across Africa and beyond. The Master of Science in Information Technology provides students with critical skills, focusing on practical applications in areas such as cyber security, mobile applications, wireless networking and strategic business planning. The Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering has a more technically focused curriculum, equipping students with skills in energy systems, mobile computing and telecommunications. Each program is taught by globally renowned faculty to the same rigorous standards as the main Pittsburgh campus.

The Postgraduate ESL and Academic Skills Instructor will provide English as a second language (ESL), and academic skills, support for CMU-Africa students. ESL support is focused on students at upper-intermediate (B2) level but is available to advanced (C1) and proficiency (C2) level students at their request. It aims at developing overall linguistic proficiency, as well as English communication skills, and is delivered through a combination of group classes, workshops, writing labs, and one-to-one support. The academic skills support will focus on professional and academic communication, study skills, technical writing, critical thinking, and familiarization with the US postgraduate education system.

This is a 50% FTE role, with support envisioned for an initial six-month period, ideally from April to September, with potential for extension.

Requirements and Skills

  • Post-graduate degree-holder

  • Experience of American (or equivalent) post-graduate education system

  • Highly proficient user of English (minimum overall score of 110 in TOEFL or 8 in IELTS)

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience teaching adults using interactive, learner-centered methodology.

  • Qualification in education or English language instruction for non-native speakers.

  • Experience teaching ESL and academic skills courses

  • Experience of teaching in the African context

  • Experience teaching engineering students.
