Description, duties, responsibilities

CMU is searching for a passionate, capable leader to serve as the Career and Alumni Services Officer, ensuring a successful transition from student life to a professional career, and enabling lifelong engagement for alumni of the university. Career and alumni services begins at enrollment and extends past graduation. Students have many opportunities to engage with professionals in the field through internships, practicums, research projects, and distinguished lectures. The career and alumni services function will take a personalized approach to professional development and placement for all students and alumni, giving them the opportunity to define their own career goals and design a plan that works towards achieving those goals. The Career and Alumni Services Officer will develop and drive an engagement strategy for alumni to ensure they remain connected to the CMU community in Rwanda, across Africa, as well as the global alumni community.

Essential Functions

Develop and manage career services offering

Workshops on job-search, resume writing, networking, interviewing, business development and other relevant skills

Inviting speakers on creating start-ups and transitioning ideas into profitable companies, in addition to the available elective courses on business development and entrepreneurship

Connecting students with sources for capital and mentoring to start their own companies

Develop and execute graduate placement strategy

Host career fairs where employers meet students.

Facilitate onsite company information sessions, onsite interviews and virtual interviews

Offer networking events at rotating locations around the region for students, employers, entrepreneurs and alumni

Build professional networking opportunity for graduates and alumni through

Maintain an information system to connect students, employers, and alumni

Services to connect employers directly to students with specific skills sets

Develop media communications in the form of videos and news articles highlighting the successes of the students and alumni

Develop new employer resources for alumni

Seek personal contact at highest decision-making level within corporations and business

Develop an effective alumni association

Engage alumni through a positive image and promote participation and good will

Engage alumni in recruiting and interviewing prospective students, represent the school at sponsored events

Assess alumni in career progress through alumni information system

Initiate new ideas to connect to alumni—through social media, CMU alumni events (in Kigali, elsewhere in Africa as well as globally), and personal connections to faculty and staff

Direct the collection, maintenance, and reporting of relevant data

Build and maintain an alumni information system recording accurate employment information at all times, meeting legal and educational association requirements.

Report updates and details of alumni career lifestyle in order to benefit other alumni, current students, incoming prospective students and the university in general

Ensure that all placement?related data is accurately maintained in database system

Maintain the Alumni information display case, Alumni newsletter/ website

Prepare and present reports for senior leadership to share key insights and opportunities (e.g., job market landscape, employment trends impacting programs, placement statistics, etc.)

Conduct exit interview sessions for graduates and completes all required documentation to be maintained in student files

Survey employers and graduates to measure the effectiveness of programs offered

Leverage collected data (e.g., student retention, student satisfaction surveys, student graduation rates, graduate surveys, etc.) to improve career services processes

Knowledge of basic marketing concepts and ability to apply them to promote the school

Requirements and Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience

  • 3 years of experience in Career Services, student advisement, recruiting, employment assistance or related field

  • Preferred : Business to business sales experience

  • Preferred : Customer service experience

  • Preferred : 5 years of experience in Career Services, student advisement, recruiting, employment assistance or related field
